California and New York Added to List of States With House Seat Shifts

Several states with notoriously-blue districts now have Republican opportunities, including two House seats in New York and one in California. A congressional seat in Oregon is also leaning Republican, according to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. House races in Illinois and New Jersey reveal shifts from “likely Democrat” to “lean Democrat,” giving Republican candidates greater possibilities for success.

"I've never seen an election where the signs are this divergent and ... lumpy," a veteran Democratic strategist familiar with polling in several races told the outlet. "It's less nationalized than we're accustomed to, and there's more weakness in the blue end of the battlefield.”

Many of these are in blue states where there are no competitive statewide races motivating voter turnout and Democratic governors have been underperforming, giving GOP candidates an edge. Republicans have also been able to seize on rising crime rates in the areas where Democrats are struggling.
