Drag Queen Posts Photos with Arizona Gubernatorial Candidate Kari Lake

Phoenix-area drag queen called AZ gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake for being “hypocritical” over recent anti-trans statements.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Richard Stevens, one of Phoenix’s best-known drag queens said he was disappointed after seeing a tweet from Lake in which she criticized recent moves to force transgender ideology into schools.
  • “They kicked God out of schools and welcomed the Drag Queens. They took down our Flag and replaced it with a rainbow,” Lake tweeted Friday.
  • Stevens, who is a former friend of the Republican candidate, shared pictures and texts claiming Lake had attended many shows and private events in the past.
  • “She’s picked a side in the culture war, but her actions in the past don’t support it,” Stevens posted on Facebook.
FORMER FRIEND OF KARI LAKE ON HER PAST SUPPORT OF DRAG QUEENS:

“Of course my feelings are hurt, but it just proves that she is a hypocrite,” Stevens said. “She’s thrown away my friendship with her to get votes from people that would rather hate gays or hate drag queens.”

BACKGROUND:
  • The GOP candidate was reportedly registered as a Democrat for a number of years surrounding Barack Obama’s first term.
  • Lake claims she had been drifting from the Republican party for some time, especially because of the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, beginning in the early 2000s.
  • “There was a period of time when I really thought the Republican Party had lost its way with the endless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq,” she told 12 News. “I was so concerned that it caused me to change party affiliation from Republican to an Independent and then for a short time a Democrat, but I returned to the Republican Party in 2012 and have been ever since.”
