YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Urges Government to Create Laws That Restrict Free Speech

Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube, is asking for more national laws passed to curb unwanted content from public consumption.

QUICK FACTS:
  • YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki created outrage when she said in a recent interview that she believes more laws concerning free speech should be put on the books.
  • The CEO said that her company has made “recommendations” to governments of various nations about potential laws on freedom of speech, according to DC Weekly.
  • Wojcicki said they are particularly interested in laws governing what can be said online, versus in print media.
WOJCICKI’S STATEMENT:
  • “Our recommendations for governments who want to have more control over online speech is to pass laws to have that very cleanly and clearly define such that we can implement it,” YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said during the interview.
  • “There are times we see the laws being implemented or being suggested that they are not very clean or possible for us to cleanly interpret them. And we’ve also seen laws just passed for the internet as opposed to for all speech. And I do think that’s a dangerous area when we start to get in and say oh sure you can say something like this for a magazine or on TV but you can’t say it on the internet.”

  • Breitbart News outlined “5 of Big Tech’s Most Serious Acts of Censorship” in May of last year, and some have asserted that the problem has grown with every passing month.
