A Newark police officer was shot and killed, and another remains in critical condition after a 14-year-old boy opened fire on them in the line of duty. The tragic incident occurred around 6:37 p.m. in the area of Broadway and Carteret, where the officers were ambushed before they could even step out of their vehicle.
The slain officer, identified as 26-year-old Officer Joseph Azcona, was a five-year veteran of the Newark Police Department. Azcona was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Saturday morning with his family and five brothers by his side. In honor of his service, Azcona was posthumously promoted to the rank of detective.
The second officer, whose name has not been released, remains in critical condition. Officials have not yet provided further updates on his status.
Authorities quickly apprehended the 14-year-old suspect, who is now facing charges of murder and attempted murder. Police are still investigating how the young teenager gained access to a firearm and what motivated him to open fire on law enforcement. Four other individuals were also taken into custody, but their identities and roles in the incident have not been disclosed.
The Newark Police Department has not confirmed whether officers returned fire, but all weapons involved in the incident have been confiscated. Authorities have not provided any information about what led to the deadly encounter, and the shooter’s name is being withheld due to his status as a minor.
In response to the devastating loss, the North Bergen Police Department expressed their condolences on Instagram, stating, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Newark Police Department and the family of Officer Joseph Azcona, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Another officer remains in critical condition. Our sincerest sympathies go to his family, friends, and loved ones. May he rest in peace.”
The senseless act of violence has left the community in shock, and questions are now being raised about how a 14-year-old came into possession of a firearm. Azcona’s family, along with the entire Newark Police Department, are mourning the loss of one of their own — a young officer who paid the ultimate price while serving his community.
“We here at the NJ State PBA are heartbroken to share that an officer from Newark PD has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and another officer is currently fighting for their life in critical condition,” the New Jersey State PBA said in a post on Facebook. “Please keep their families, fellow Newark PD officers, and our entire New Jersey law enforcement community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
