Xavier Worthy Arrested on Assault Charge

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested Friday evening in Williamson County, Texas, on charges of assaulting a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation.

Fox26 reporter Will Kunkel first broke the news, confirming that the former Texas Longhorns star had been taken into custody. The Chiefs organization released a brief statement saying, “We are aware and gathering information,” according to the New York Post.

The arrest comes just weeks after Worthy’s rookie season ended with a standout performance in Super Bowl 59, where he scored two touchdowns. Selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Worthy was expected to play a key role for the Chiefs moving forward.

The 21-year-old receiver is engaged to sprinter Tia Jones, with whom he recently bought a home. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the alleged victim.

Worthy’s arrest adds to a growing list of legal troubles for Chiefs players. Last season, rookie receiver Rashee Rice faced multiple charges, including an assault allegation that was later dropped, as well as charges stemming from a high-speed car chase and hit-and-run incident. Although Rice has not yet been suspended, both he and Worthy could face discipline under the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach recently praised Worthy’s development, saying he and Rice had the potential to be a “dynamic combination.” However, this latest legal issue could put Worthy’s future with the team in jeopardy.

During his rookie season, Worthy played in all 17 regular-season games, recording 59 receptions, six touchdowns, and 104 rushing yards on 20 carries. With uncertainty now surrounding his status, the Chiefs may need to reevaluate their plans at wide receiver.
