X Returns to Brazil

Social media platform X has been restored to Brazil after the country’s Supreme Court ruled to end its suspension.

“X is proud to return to Brazil. Giving tens of millions of Brazilians access to our indispensable platform was paramount throughout this entire process,” X’s Global Government Affairs account wrote. “We will continue to defend freedom of speech, within the boundaries of the law, everywhere we operate.”

X had been suspended since late August after it did not comply with Brazilian law.

“The resumption of (X)’s activities on national territory was conditioned, solely, on full compliance with Brazilian laws and absolute observance of the Judiciary’s decisions, out of respect for national sovereignty,” Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes wrote in the court document.

In complying with Brazil’s laws, X must now block certain accounts from the platform, name a legal representative, and pay fines, according to the Associated Press.
