White House Hails ‘NATO 3.0’

The White House released a fact sheet detailing the progress made among NATO allies during the 2026 Ankara Summit.

“President Trump’s leadership has produced a generational shift in NATO, ramping up allies’ stake in industrial expansion and creating jobs for thousands of American workers,” the White House declared, stating that this approach is called “NATO 3.0” and “moves the Alliance toward greater burden sharing and self-reliance.”

Rather than NATO operating from a dependence model, the Trump administration has sought to shift the Alliance toward a “true partnership.”

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte also drew attention to “NATO 3.0.” He explained during a press conference that modernizing the Alliance and preparing for the future means a “stronger Europe in a stronger NATO, with European Allies and Canada working with the United States, taking on greater responsibility for the defence of the Alliance, transformative investment in defence, major deals for industry on both sides of the Atlantic.”

“We are rebalancing our security for the better, that is what NATO 3.0 is all about,” he stated. “An Alliance that continues to adapt. An alliance that continues to deliver to keep one billion people safe. Thank you.

Last month, War Secretary Pete Hegseth highlighted the idea of “NATO 3.0.” He said during his address to NATO while in Brussels, “We’re doubling down on our effort to make NATO what it always was supposed to be: a balanced alliance with Europe in the lead for its own defense — NATO 3.0.” He explained the 3.0 as a post-Cold-War representation of the Alliance with a focus on tangible military capabilities at the ready to deter threats and is led by Europe, not the United States.
