‘We’re Saying Merry Christmas Again’: Trump and Harris Clash Over Holiday Cheer

The Trump campaign recently shared a throwback video highlighting Vice President Kamala Harris’s comments about saying “Merry Christmas,” with a pledge from the Trump team to bring back Christmas cheer if Trump is re-elected. In a 2017 speech regarding protections for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, Harris said, “How dare we speak ‘Merry Christmas!’ How dare we!”

The Trump Team TikTok shared the clip of Harris, following it up with footage of former President Donald Trump declaring, “Well, guess what? We’re saying ‘Merry Christmas’ again.” During his 2016 campaign, Trump often promised a return to traditional holiday greetings. “If I’m president, you’re going to see ‘Merry Christmas’ in department stores, believe me,” he remarked in one speech, repeating similar sentiments throughout his campaign: “If I become president, we’re all going to be saying ‘Merry Christmas’ again.”

This TikTok post appeared on Sunday, just two days before Election Day. Currently, polls from RealClearPolitics indicate a national tie between Trump and Harris. Trump leads slightly in swing states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, and Arizona, while Harris holds narrow leads in Michigan and Wisconsin.

In her 2017 remarks, Harris expressed concerns over the fate of children affected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. “When we all sing happy tunes and say ‘Merry Christmas,’ these children are not going to have a merry Christmas,” she said. “How dare we speak ‘Merry Christmas!’ How dare we! They will not have a merry Christmas. They don’t know if they will be here in a matter of days, weeks, and months.”

Immigration remains a central issue in this election, with the Trump campaign emphasizing border security and criticizing the Biden administration’s policies. Meanwhile, Harris has focused on reproductive rights, particularly appealing to women voters, while also working to garner more male support amid Democratic concerns over gender-based polling gaps.

As the holiday season approaches, Christmas spirit is already making its mark. Stores have begun displaying festive inventory, and holiday decorations are appearing nationwide. In New York, the iconic Rockefeller Christmas Tree has been selected and is set to arrive in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday.
