War in Ukraine to Cause Massive Food Supply Chain Crisis

According to the director of one major agricultural organization, the world is on the verge of a worldwide food crisis as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.

QUICK FACTS:
  • A worldwide food supply chain crisis could be the result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Breitbart News reports.
  • The ongoing invasion is believed to put massive pressure on the global grain supply, according to the head of the world’s leading fertilizer company.
  • Russia and Ukraine provide a significant portion of the world’s grain supply and both have major roles in supplying fertilizer and its raw materials.
  • The grain trade could come to a grinding halt if the hostilities in Eastern Europe continue to escalate, according to Svein Tore Holsether, head of agra company Yara International.
  • The agriculture industry expert told the BBC that around half of the world relies on fertilizers from this region.
MORE FROM AGRO INDUSTRY EXPERTS:
  • “Half the world’s population gets food as a result of fertilisers…and if that’s removed from the field for some crops, [the yield] will drop by 50%,” Holsether said during his interview. “For me, it’s not whether we are moving into a global food crisis – it’s how large the crisis will be,” he went on to say.
  • The Yara International boss also reminded readers that around one-quarter of the key nutrients used in food production come from Russia, saying sanctions will restrain that supply.
  • “At the same time we’re doing whatever we can do at the moment to also find additional sources,” he emphasized. “But with such short timelines, it’s limited.”
BACKGROUND:
  • According to Summit News, the number of people worldwide facing starvation has already gone from 80 million to 276 million in the last few years, due to COVID lockdowns.
  • National Public Radio called Russia’s invasion on Ukraine an attack on not just the citizens of Ukraine, but on the malnourished all around the world.
