Victor Davis Hanson, Democrats Have ‘Forgotten Nothing and Learned Nothing’

Hoover Institution Senior Fellow Victor Davis Hanson argued during a Friday podcast that Democratic Texas Rep. Al Green’s announcement of articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump exemplifies the Democratic Party’s failure to course-correct after the 2024 election.

Trump made significant gains among Hispanic and black men in the November election. Speaking on “The Victor Davis Hanson Show,” Hanson pointed to Green’s impeachment effort as part of a broader pattern of Democrats being out of touch with their constituents, particularly men.

“The thing is that there has been an effort of the elites of the Democratic Party. They’re very worried about the 2024 election,” Hanson said. He referenced the Democratic National Convention’s (DNC) recent elections, where outgoing DNC chair Jaime Harrison struggled to explain the party’s gender inclusivity policies, leading to confusion about balancing vice chair positions among different identities. The DNC ultimately elected two men and two women, including left-wing activist David Hogg.

Hanson called Hogg “unhinged” and suggested that Democratic leaders are disconnected from their voters.

Hanson highlighted that 25-26% of black men voted for Trump, increasing the black vote for Trump to 13-15%, a level at which Democrats struggle to win elections. Additionally, 55% of Hispanic men backed Trump, nearly splitting the Hispanic vote, while Asian support for Biden dropped from 70% in 2020 to around 45% in 2024.

Rather than acknowledging these shifts, Hanson argued that Democratic figures like Al Green and Rep. Jasmine Crockett continue to focus on racial grievances instead of adapting to voter concerns. He noted that Green has previously introduced unsuccessful impeachment articles against Trump multiple times.

Hanson criticized the Democratic National Convention’s focus on identity politics, saying, “When you have a Democratic National Convention and you start squabbling over your sexual orientation and how many representatives must be black, Hispanic, or nonbinary, people look at that and think, ‘These people are blank, blank crazy.’”

Additionally, he called out Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy for publicly stating that he is housing an illegal immigrant and criticized Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for allowing a massive protest on Highway 101, where demonstrators waved Mexican flags in opposition to Trump’s immigration policies.

Summing up his argument, Hanson cited the famous Talleyrand aphorism: “They’ve forgotten nothing and learned nothing.” He believes the Democratic Party has failed to recognize why they lost the 2024 election and has made no efforts to adjust.
