USAID Breakdown: Your Tax Dollars at Work

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has allocated approximately $270 million to support independent media and the ‘free flow’ of information in 2025.

Breakdown of USAID’s Media Support Funding:
  • Journalist Training and Support: USAID provided training and support to 6,200 journalists worldwide.
  • Support for Non-State Media Outlets: The agency assisted 707 non-state media outlets, ranging from large organizations to smaller, independent platforms.
  • Media-Focused Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): USAID supported 279 media-sector NGOs dedicated to strengthening independent media.

This funding aims to promote ‘press freedom’ and bolster independent journalism in over 30 countries.

However, the recent suspension of USAID operations has raised concerns about the future of these initiatives. Following a freeze on U.S. foreign aid, USAID’s website became inaccessible, its social media accounts were suspended, and employees were instructed to stay home. This abrupt halt has left many journalistic organizations worldwide, which rely on American aid funding, in a state of confusion and uncertainty. The affected entities range from large international NGOs to smaller media outlets serving audiences in countries with repressive regimes.

The suspension of USAID’s activities has led to immediate impacts on media organizations globally. Many have had to halt operations or scale back activities due to the sudden loss of funding.

This latest development can be added to the growing list of ways taxpayer dollars were mishandled by the previous administration and USAID:

  • $270 million to support independent media, including anti-Trump Politico
  • $20 million on a new Sesame Street show in Iraq
  • $6 million to fund tourism in Egypt
  • $4.5 million to combat disinformation in Kazakhstan
  • $2.5M to promote DEI in Serbia
  • $2 million for sex changes in Guatemala
  • $70K for a DEI musical in Ireland
  • $32K for a trans comic book in Peru

However, the notion of “independent media” becomes questionable when taxpayer dollars are funneled into outlets that may push narratives favorable to the U.S. government’s foreign policy interests.

Critics argue that government-funded journalism risks becoming a tool for ideological influence rather than true press freedom. With USAID’s operations currently suspended, this raises broader concerns about how taxpayer money is being spent and whether such funding aligns with American values of free speech and a truly independent press.

As lawmakers and watchdog groups scrutinize these expenditures, many conservatives are calling for greater accountability to ensure that media independence is not compromised by government funding.
