  • Individuals were also encouraged “to use their voice, power, and privilege to enact change in their classrooms, community, and practice.”
LOYOLA UNIVERSITY MARYLAND ON ITS PURPOSE FOR HOLDING WHITE ACCOUNTABILITY MEETINGS:

“This will be a brave space to reflect, discuss, learn, grow, and most importantly, keep ourselves and our campus accountable as we continue to work towards dismantling white supremacy in all the spaces that it lives, even (and especially) when that space is inside of us,” LUM WEBSITE STATES.

BACKGROUND:
  • College campuses across the country have also hosted similar accountability groups, with Loyola University Maryland scheduled to have its third gathering this month.
  • “Many resources have been offered as we all work to dismantle oppression in our own lives and institutions,” Loyola’s website reads. “We would like to offer white and white-passing folks the opportunity to put those resources into action by engaging in deep, meaningful conversations and exercises on anti-racism.”
  • Critics of the meetings claim they perpetuate racism and the idea that white people today are inherently racist based on their skin color.
  • “It’s just very sad and disappointing that the university would organize an event that promotes legitimately racist ideas,” the president of the University of South Carolina’s TPUSA chapter said.
