The United States has secured nuclear agreements with the European nations of Slovakia and Hungary, advancing plans to construct power plants in the countries.
The agreement with Slovakia sees the U.S. funding the pre-construction phase for a “new Westinghouse large reactor build,” the State Department explained. Meanwhile, the agreement with Hungary, called the U.S.-Hungary Civil Nuclear Intergovernmental Agreement, will “deliver decades of cooperation in nuclear energy,” and “underscores U.S. commitment to making Hungary a hub for regional small modular reactor (SMR) development” while also reaffirming that U.S. entities will U.S. “help Hungary handle spent nuclear fuel storage.”
Both agreements align with President Trump’s 2025 executive order bolstering nuclear reactor technologies for national security interests. “The Federal Government must utilize its full authority to accelerate the secure and responsible development, demonstration, deployment, and export of United States designed advanced nuclear technologies to bolster readiness and enhance American technological superiority,” the order says, further declaring that the nation must seek to export “nuclear technology to our allies and commercial partners, strengthening our shared ability to combat reliance on foreign adversaries through the use of safe, secure, and safeguarded nuclear technologies.”
Last week, President Trump endorsed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for re-election, writing on Truth Social that the leader “fights tirelessly for, and loves, his Great Country and People, just like I do for the United States of America.”
“Viktor works hard to Protect Hungary, Grow the Economy, Create Jobs, Promote Trade, Stop Illegal Immigration, and Ensure LAW AND ORDER! Relations between Hungary and the United States have reached new heights of cooperation and spectacular achievement under my Administration, thanks largely to Prime Minister Orbán,” Trump wrote. “I look forward to continuing working closely with him so that both of our Countries can further advance this tremendous path to SUCCESS and cooperation.”
