U.K. Pledges More Support to Ukraine

The U.K. announced that it will provide more military support to Ukraine in a joint effort with Norway.

The two countries are pulling $580 million from their existing funding packages, according to reports. The effort will be used to deliver drones.

According to a statement obtained by Bloomberg, U.K. Defence Secretary John Healey is expected to say at a Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting that the joint effort is “vital to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position and pile pressure on Putin to help force him to end this terrible war. We cannot jeopardize peace by forgetting the war, which is why today’s major package will surge support to Ukraine’s front-line fight.”

Britain is further considering deploying its service members to Ukraine for up to five years, according to a report from The Telegraph. Healey did not elaborate on the potential development to reporters.

“We have discussed, and I confirmed, our four aims or objectives in military planning: secure the skies, secure the seas, support peace on land and support the regeneration and strength of the Ukrainian forces,” Healey said. “The Ukrainians themselves say our best security for the future will be the strength of our own forces and our ability to deter Russia ourselves in the future.”

The reported development stands in contrast to that of the United States. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared in February that “there will not be U.S. troops deployed to Ukraine.”

“President Trump has been clear with the American people — and with many of your leaders — that stopping the fighting and reaching an enduring peace is a top priority. He intends to end this war by diplomacy and bring both Russia and Ukraine to the table. And the U.S. Department of Defense will help achieve this goal,” he said during a Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting.
