Trump Warns of Global Consequences Without Greenland

President Trump argued that the United States’ acquisition of Greenland would only strengthen NATO, not jeopardize the alliance. Discussing the matter on Truth Social, Trump declared that the nation needs Greenland “for the purpose of National Security.”

“It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! Militarily, without the vast power of the United States, much of which I built during my first term, and am now bringing to a new and even higher level, NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent – Not even close!” he wrote. “They know that, and so do I. NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES. Anything less than that is unacceptable.”

President Trump’s comments come as Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with Danish and Greenlandic officials on January 14.

According to the Atlantic Council, Greenland is a “strategic asset” for the United States and is “central to monitoring Russian—and, potentially, soon Chinese—submarines entering the Atlantic.” Its radar tracking systems “feed directly into US homeland defense,” the organization noted, adding that Greenland is further “emerging as a critical node in satellite command and control, space domain awareness, and satellite tracking.”

Separately, a bipartisan group of lawmakers is set to visit Denmark this week. Upon visiting Denmark on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17, the lawmakers will meet with Danish and Greenlandic officials and leaders to “highlight bipartisan support for our allies in the Kingdom of Denmark and discuss how to deepen this partnership in line with our shared principles of sovereignty and self-determination, and in the face of growing challenges around the world, especially bolstering Arctic security and promoting stronger trade relations between the two countries,” a statement from Senator Chris Coons’ (D-DE) office says.
