President Donald Trump suggests tariff dividends may be on the table for Americans at certain income levels.
While preparing to board Air Force One, Trump told reporters, “We’re going to pay down debt. We have a lot of money coming in, much more money than the country has ever seen, by hundreds of billions of dollars. There could be a distribution of a dividend to the people of our country. I would say for people that would be middle-income people and lower-income people, we could do a dividend.”
He stressed that his administration will focus on “reducing debt.”
“We have hundreds of billions of dollars pouring into our country now. We should have done this many years ago,” Trump added.
While Trump has floated the idea of dividends to Americans, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) has put forward a bill providing tariff rebates to families.
The bill, called the “American Worker Rebate Act of 2025,” specifically amends the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to “provide rebates to individuals using tariff proceeds,” the legislation says. The rebate would be at least $600, providing $2,400 for a family of four.
The United States collected nearly $30 billion in tariff revenues throughout July, reports indicate. The number leaves total tariff revenue for the year at more than $152 billion.
President Trump issued an executive order on July 31 that extended the start date of many tariffs to August 7. The order explained that some trading partners have “offered terms that, in my judgment, do not sufficiently address imbalances in our trading relationship or have failed to align sufficiently with the United States on economic and national-security matters,” while other nations have “failed to engage in negotiations with the United States.”
