President Donald Trump issued a fiery statement against Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) after the senator voted alongside Democrats to move forward with a bill banning congressional stock trading. While Hawley reintroduced the PELOSI Act in April, the bill has since been renamed the Honest Act and bans the president and vice president from making trades while in office.
“Why would one ‘Republican,’ Senator Josh Hawley from the Great State of Missouri, join with all of the Democrats to block a Review, sponsored by Senator Rick Scott, and with the support of almost all other Republicans, of Nancy Pelosi’s Stock Trading over the last 25 years,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The information was inappropriately released just minutes before the Vote — Very much like SABOTAGE! The Democrats, because of our tremendous ACHIEVEMENTS and SUCCESS, have been trying to ‘Target’ me for a long period of time, and they’re using Josh Hawley, who I got elected TWICE, as a pawn to help them.”
“I wonder why Hawley would pass a Bill that Nancy Pelosi is in absolute love with — He is playing right into the dirty hands of the Democrats,” he further criticized. “It’s a great Bill for her, and her ‘husband,’ but so bad for our Country! I don’t think real Republicans want to see their President, who has had unprecedented success, TARGETED, because of the ‘whims’ of a second-tier Senator named Josh Hawley!”
Hawley voted with Senate Democrats 8-7 to advance the stock trading ban out of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. When asked about the bill’s details, the senator told Fox News’ Jesse Watters, as per The Hill, “I think that the president — a number of people who are opposed to banning stock trading, had said to the president that he would be covered by the bill. He’d have to sell Mar-a-Lago and sell assets. Not the case at all.”
“The president and the vice president and all their assets are totally exempted,” he added.
