President Donald Trump said he was reducing his 50-day deadline on Russia to negotiate a peace agreement to “10 or 12 days.”
“We thought we had that settled numerous times, and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever,” Trump told reporters alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as per The Hill. “You have bodies lying all over the street. And I say that’s not the way to do it. So we’ll see what happens with that. I’m very disappointed. I’m disappointed in President Putin.”
“I’m going to reduce that 50 days. I gave him to a lesser number, because I think I already know the answer what’s going to happen,” Trump added.
He later reiterated to reporters that he is “going to make a new deadline, of about 10, 10 or 12 days from today. There’s no reason in waiting. It was 50 days. I wanted to be generous, but we just don’t see any progress being made.”
On July 14, Trump threatened 100 percent tariffs on nations trading with Russia if no peace deal emerges within 50 days. “We’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days,” he said while hosting NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the White House. “It’s very simple, and they’ll be at 100 percent.”
In response to Trump’s warning, British Secretary of State for Defence John Healey announced a “50-day drive” to arm Ukraine.
