Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that there is “certainly” room for President Donald Trump on Mount Rushmore. His comments came during an interview with Lara Trump as President Trump signed an executive order granting the Interior Department the authority to review monuments and statues removed under President Joe Biden’s administration.
During the conversation, Lara Trump asked Burgum if Mount Rushmore could one day feature Trump’s likeness. Burgum responded, “Well, they certainly have room for it there.” He also noted that Mount Rushmore would be part of the national celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
The idea of adding Trump to Mount Rushmore has been proposed before. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) introduced legislation to make the addition official after Trump’s second term. Meanwhile, Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) has also sought to honor the 47th president by introducing a bill to designate Trump’s birthday, June 14—also Flag Day—as a federal holiday.
Tenney described Trump as the most pivotal modern president, citing his role in negotiating the Abraham Accords, securing historic tax cuts, and leading the country through economic and geopolitical challenges. She emphasized that, just as George Washington’s birthday is a federal holiday, Trump’s birthday should be recognized as well.
The push to honor Trump through federal recognition and potential monument additions reflects his continued influence in American politics. With national celebrations approaching for the country’s 250th anniversary, discussions surrounding Trump’s legacy are likely to remain a focal point.
