President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on India, bringing total levies to 50%.
In a new executive order on the matter, Trump wrote, “I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil.”
“I have received additional information from various senior officials on, among other things, the actions of the Government of the Russian Federation with respect to the situation in Ukraine,” the order reads. “After considering this additional information, among other things, I find that the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066 continues and that the actions and policies of the Government of the Russian Federation continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”
“Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent,” Trump added.
Trump previously warned that he would raise the tariffs if it continued purchasing Russian oil.
“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!”
Trump’s statement comes days after he shared that the country would be hit with a 25% tariff on goods. He shared to social media on July 30 that India has “always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY.”
