Former President Donald Trump issued a powerful statement on Thursday in recognition of National K-9 Veterans Day, paying tribute to the courageous military and law enforcement dogs that have served alongside American heroes. Trump highlighted the dedication, bravery, and invaluable role of these working dogs in ensuring national security.
“Dogs are not only man’s best friend, offering companionship and loyalty, but also guardians, instinctively protecting their loved ones with unwavering devotion,” Trump said. “On National K-9 Veterans Day, the First Lady and I join our Nation in honoring the dedicated service of those working dogs serving alongside our military and law enforcement to defend our citizens and our Homeland.”
Since the founding of the K-9 Corps, more than 30,000 military working dogs have served in combat, search-and-rescue missions, border security, and law enforcement. Currently, over 1,600 K-9 units actively assist in military operations, detecting explosives, tracking high-value targets, and protecting U.S. troops.
Trump’s statement honored notable K-9 veterans, including Conan, the Belgian Malinois who helped take down ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2019. Another hero, Hurricane, the Secret Service dog who stopped a White House intruder, became the most decorated dog in the agency’s history. Cairo, the Navy SEAL dog involved in the 2011 raid that eliminated Osama bin Laden, was also recognized for his service.
The White House commemorated the day with a post on X, featuring a photo of Trump with Conan, who was awarded a medal and plaque for his bravery. Trump emphasized the sacrifices made by these elite working dogs, saying, “Today, we salute the sacrifices and service of our dedicated working dogs for their incredible acts of canine courage.”
These highly trained K-9s stand as loyal partners to the men and women serving America, risking their lives for the safety of the nation. Trump’s leadership continues to highlight the importance of national security, law enforcement, and unwavering support for those—both human and canine—who protect the country.
