Trump Secures India-Pakistan Ceasefire

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that his administration successfully brokered a “full and immediate ceasefire” between India and Pakistan following a night of escalating military hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbors. The announcement came after both countries exchanged missile and artillery strikes, hitting military installations well beyond the contested Kashmir region.

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social, congratulating both sides for using “Common Sense and Great Intelligence.”

Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the ceasefire and said it was effective immediately, adding that lines of communication between both governments and their militaries had been restored. Dar emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace while affirming its stance on sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also confirmed the ceasefire, stating that all land, air, and sea hostilities would halt starting at 17:00 Indian Standard Time. Military leaders from both countries are expected to meet again on May 12 to continue coordination.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Vice President JD Vance and he were in continuous contact with key officials from both nations, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif. “We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” Rubio said.

The ceasefire comes after nearly a week of escalating violence, which began with India’s airstrike on terrorist positions in Pakistan following an April 22 massacre of tourists by militants with alleged Pakistani ties. Hostilities peaked Friday night when India struck three Pakistani airbases, including one near Islamabad, prompting a Pakistani counterattack on six Indian military sites in what was dubbed “Operation Bunyan Marsoos.”

The most alarming development in the conflict was that both nations targeted areas beyond Kashmir, raising fears of a broader war. With this ceasefire in place, both sides are expected to begin diplomatic talks at a neutral site to address a range of unresolved issues.
