President Donald Trump has appointed Alina Habba, his former personal attorney and current White House counsel, as the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey. This appointment follows the nomination of the previous interim U.S. Attorney, John Giordano, as the U.S. ambassador to Namibia.
Trump shared Habba’s appointment on Truth Social, saying: “It is with great pleasure that I am announcing Alina Habba, Esq., who is currently serving as Counselor to the President, and has represented me for a long time, will be our interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, her Home State, effective immediately!
“Alina will lead with the same diligence and conviction that has defined her career, and she will fight tirelessly to secure a Legal System that is both ‘Fair and Just’ for the wonderful people of New Jersey.”
Habba has been a prominent figure in Trump’s legal team, representing him in various high-profile cases, including defamation lawsuits and civil fraud proceedings. Her legal career includes defending Trump against allegations from writer E. Jean Carroll and involvement in cases related to the Trump Organization.
In addition to her legal work, Habba has served as a senior adviser and spokesperson for Trump’s political action committee. Her appointment aligns with a broader pattern of the administration placing trusted personal attorneys in key governmental positions.
Habba has expressed a commitment to addressing crime and corruption in New Jersey, criticizing state politicians for their handling of issues in cities like Newark and Camden. She aims to collaborate with Attorney General Pam Bondi to advance the administration’s agenda in the state.
This appointment underscores the administration’s strategy of positioning loyal and experienced legal professionals in pivotal roles within the Department of Justice.
