The Trump administration revoked the deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News, “Before he left town, Mayorkas signed an order that said for 18 months, they were going to extend protection to people on Temporary Protected Status, which meant they were going to be able to stay here and violate our laws for another 18 months. We stopped that.”
“We are going to follow the process, evaluate all of these individuals that are in our country, including the Venezuelans that are here,” she said.
Earlier this month, DHS under the Biden administration granted hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals Temporary Protected Status (TPS), including about 600,000 Venezuelan migrants.
“After reviewing the country conditions in Venezuela and consulting with interagency partners, it was determined that an 18-month TPS extension is warranted based on the severe humanitarian emergency the country continues to face due to political and economic crises under the inhumane Maduro regime,” DHS said. “These conditions have contributed to high levels of crime and violence, impacting access to food, medicine, healthcare, water, electricity, and fuel. Such a determination meets the statutory obligation to decide, at least 60 days before the expiration of a TPS designation, whether the conditions for designation continue to be met and merit an extension.”
During the first week of President Donald Trump’s second term, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) removed 7,300 illegal immigrants from the United States. “In the first week of the Trump Administration, we have fulfilled President Trump’s promise to the American people to arrest and deport violent criminals illegally in the country. In one week, law enforcement officials have removed and returned 7,300 illegal aliens,” ICE said in a statement.
