A transgender individual has won the Democratic nomination for Delaware’s sole U.S. House seat.
State Senator Sarah McBride may serve as the first openly transgender lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives, as McBride is expected to win the general election.
The seat is currently held by Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester, who is running for Senate.
Following the nomination, McBride wrote on X, “With a heart full of hope – and because of tens of thousands of Delawareans who turned out to the polls – tonight I’m proud to become the Democratic nominee for Delaware’s sole seat in the United States House of Representatives. Thank you, Delaware!”
McBride told the Associated Press that the primary results reflect the “goodness” of Delaware residents.”
“I’m not running to make history,” McBride said. “I’m running to make historic progress for Delawareans.”
