Senate Majority Leader John Thune declared that the Democratic Party is “floundering” and in the midst of an identity crisis, attributing their disarray to what he called a severe case of “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Thune stated that the Democrats have become unrecognizable to mainstream Americans due to their far-left positions and obsession with attacking President Donald Trump.
“They are a hot mess,” Thune said, emphasizing that Democrats are struggling to appeal to independent voters and even moderate Democrats. He pointed out that the party has moved so far left, particularly under the influence of its progressive wing, that it no longer offers a viable alternative to voters seeking common sense leadership.
Thune cited the rising wave of Democrat Senate retirements—including from Senators Dick Durbin, Jeanne Shaheen, Gary Peters, Tina Smith, and Michael Bennet—as a sign of internal frustration and lack of direction. “They’ve given us some opportunities,” Thune said, urging Republicans to remain focused and deliver on their agenda in cooperation with President Trump.
He warned that Democrats, if returned to power in either chamber, would likely prioritize impeachment over governance. Thune criticized Rep. Shri Thanedar’s recent introduction of articles of impeachment against Trump as proof that the opposition party is still consumed by bitterness over the 2024 election.
“They are filled with anger,” Thune added. “They can’t believe—they are still overcoming the disappointment of having gotten clobbered in the 2024 election.” He said Senate Democrats frequently use filibusters and speeches to vent their animosity, lacking a serious agenda for the nation.
According to Thune, Republican success hinges on demonstrating reliability and delivering results. “We just got to make sure we deliver on our agenda,” he said, pointing to the GOP’s advantage in presenting a platform grounded in common sense policies—like protecting women’s sports and restoring fiscal responsibility—that align with mainstream American values.
