Teenagers Charged After Vandalizing Pride Flag

Four teenagers were arrested after they vandalized Pride flags in Atlanta.

The Atlanta Police Department (APD) received reports earlier this week of six individuals causing a disturbance “popping wheelies, tearing up flags,” a man said in a released 911 call. Two of the individuals remain at large. Those taken into custody include two 18-year-olds, a 17-year-old, and a 16-year-old.

The teenagers have been charged with obstruction, criminal damage to property, conspiracy, and prowling.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to the citizen who witnessed the incident and promptly reported it. This case serves as a reminder: if you see something, say something,” the police department said in a statement reported by a local news station. “Together, we can continue to build a safer and more inclusive Atlanta for everyone.”

According to a report by The New York Times, a Georgia hate crime law passed in 2020 says that “crimes motivated by the victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity can lead to enhanced penalties.” The outlet noted that a “misdemeanor offense can carry an additional six to 12 months in prison and a fine of up to $5,000,” while “felonies can result in two to 12 more years behind bars.”

Atlanta police Sgt. Brandon Hayes noted that whether the acts constitute a “hate crime” is “still under investigation.”

“We’re still looking at all avenues as far as how that charge will possibly come about,” Hayes stated.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) condemned the charges against the teenagers, saying, “They should be released and charges should be dropped immediately.” She added, “If you can burn an American flag, you can tear down and rip up a pride flag.”
