Rep. Ted Lieu said Friday that President Donald Trump would be subpoenaed to testify before Congress if Democrats regain control of the House in the November midterm elections. The California Democrat made the remarks during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Chris Jansing Reports,” where he predicted intensified scrutiny over matters related to Jeffrey Epstein.
Ted Lieu responded to host Chris Jansing, who asked whether he believed President Trump would ever testify regarding Epstein if Democrats take control of the chamber. Lieu said he believes president trump would ultimately be compelled to testify.
Lieu alleged that President Trump appears in Epstein-related files and claimed there are serious allegations that warrant further investigation. He stated that if Democrats flip the House, they would issue a subpoena to compel testimony.
During the segment, Jansing referenced former President Bill Clinton, who was reportedly testifying under oath in a separate proceeding. Lieu argued that Republicans have set a precedent by pursuing investigations and depositions involving Democratic figures, suggesting similar tactics could be applied if control shifts.
Lieu also said he believes Democrats could secure unified control of the White House and Congress within the next several years. Under that scenario, he argued, a Democratic-led Department of Justice would have the authority to enforce subpoenas if necessary.
President Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing related to Epstein and has previously stated that he distanced himself from the financier years before Epstein’s 2019 arrest. No new charges have been filed against president trump in connection with the matter.
The comments reflect ongoing partisan tensions surrounding congressional oversight and investigations. With midterm elections approaching, control of the House remains a central battleground that could determine the scope and direction of future inquiries.
