Ted Cruz Endorses Chip Roy in Texas AG Battle

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) formally endorsed Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) on Saturday in the race for Texas Attorney General, calling him a “battle-tested warrior” and “fierce defender of the Constitution.” Roy, a former chief of staff to Cruz, announced his campaign this week to succeed Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is running for U.S. Senate against Sen. John Cornyn.

In a public statement, Cruz acknowledged that multiple strong conservatives are vying for the position but emphasized Roy’s experience and dedication. “Texas is blessed to have an abundance of strong conservatives stepping forward to lead,” Cruz said. “I am proud to endorse Chip Roy. With over two decades of dedicated service, Chip has consistently shown the courage, integrity, and conviction required to defend our great state.”

Roy, currently serving his fourth term in Congress, said he is seeking to “come home” to Texas after years of fighting for conservative priorities in Washington. His platform focuses on border security, election integrity, law enforcement support, and protecting Texas land from foreign influence. He emphasized his commitment to defending Texas’s “legacy of liberty and security.”

Roy’s résumé includes roles as First Assistant Attorney General under Paxton, senior counsel to former Gov. Rick Perry, and staff director for the Senate Judiciary Committee under Sen. Cornyn. In Congress, he chairs the Subcommittee on the Constitution and serves on the Rules, Budget, and Judiciary Committees.

Other GOP contenders include state Sens. Joan Huffman and Mayes Middleton, and former Paxton deputy Aaron Reitz. Roy enters the race with strong conservative credentials and the high-profile backing of one of Texas’s most influential Republican senators.
