A group of 17 Republican Louisiana legislators has called for more family-friendly Super Bowl halftime performances, expressing concerns over past shows they deem inappropriate for children. In a letter addressed to the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and the Louisiana Stadium and Expo District, the lawmakers highlighted specific performances they found objectionable.
The letter criticizes Jennifer Lopez’s 2020 halftime show, describing it as sexually suggestive and highlighting her use of a stripper pole during the performance. Rihanna’s 2023 show also faced scrutiny for explicit lyrics and provocative gestures. The legislators argue that such performances objectify women and are unsuitable for children.
The lawmakers emphasized that Louisiana taxpayers, who fund the event, deserve a say in its content. They urged that future contracts for the use of state-funded facilities include provisions ensuring that performers’ conduct aligns with Louisiana’s community decency standards.
This year’s Super Bowl LIX, scheduled for February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, will feature Kendrick Lamar as the halftime performer. This will be Lamar’s second half time show after he co-headlined in 2022.
While the letter does not specifically mention Lamar, it appeals to organizers to ensure that the upcoming show is appropriate for all audiences.
