South Korean Fighter Jets Accidentally Bomb Village During Drill

On March 6, two South Korean KF-16 fighter jets accidentally dropped eight 500-pound MK-82 bombs on the village of Nogok-ri in Pocheon, near the North Korean border. The mishap occurred during a live-fire training exercise with U.S. forces, resulting in injuries to 15 civilians and significant property damage.

The incident took place around 10 a.m. local time when the bombs were “abnormally released” outside the designated firing range. Preliminary investigations suggest that incorrect coordinates were inputted by one of the pilots, leading to the unintended release over the civilian area.

The explosion damaged several structures, including homes and a Catholic church. Photographs from the scene showed buildings with shattered windows and debris scattered across the area. Local residents described the aftermath as chaotic, with one individual stating that the site resembled a battlefield.

Emergency responders evacuated approximately 50 residents as a precautionary measure. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals, with reports indicating that two individuals sustained serious injuries, including fractures and shrapnel wounds.

The South Korean Air Force issued an official apology, expressing deep regret for the unintended release of the bombs and the resulting civilian casualties. They have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and have suspended live-fire exercises pending the outcome. Additionally, the Air Force has pledged to provide compensation for the damages incurred.

This accident occurred during preliminary exercises ahead of the annual Freedom Shield joint military drills between South Korea and the United States, scheduled from March 10 to 20. These exercises aim to enhance readiness against potential threats, particularly from North Korea. Despite the incident, officials have stated that the main exercises will proceed as planned.

Local authorities, including Pocheon’s Mayor Baek Young-hyun, have called for a halt to military exercises in the area until comprehensive safety measures are established to prevent future accidents.
