Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old Democratic Socialist, beat longtime Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette for Colorado’s 1st District.
“Another Democratic Socialist is going to Congress! Congratulations to DSA member @MelatKirosCO! Congresswoman Kiros will take the fight for a better world to D.C: to Abolish ICE, free Palestine, and win Universal Childcare and Medicare for All,” the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) wrote on social media.
Miros, who was born in Ethiopia, has also stated that the September 11, 2001, attack was “inevitable.” When asked if the terror attack was the “inevitable consequence of American foreign policy, Kiros told 9News, “Inevitable in the sense that we destabilized a lot of the Middle East that forced people to believe that another act of violence was the only response.”
“And again, just like I said before, our responsibility is to get rid of those conditions that lead to violence in the first place,” Kiros continued.
She has also stated that the United States “already” has socialism. We have socialism already. It’s in the roads we drive on, the schools we send our kids to, the fire stations we call upon,” she said. “I’m just asking that we extend that security to our healthcare, to our housing, to our nutritional food, to our higher education so that we’re actually meeting the basic needs of everyday working families in this country.”
Another individual backed by the DSA, lawmaker Francesca Hong of Wisconsin, is running for governor in a wide-open race to succeed retiring Gov. Tony Evers. In Michigan, DSA-backed state lawmaker Donavan McKinney is challenging Rep. Shri Thanedar in the 13th Congressional District ahead of an August primary.
