Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan border security bill that provided $70 billion for overseas aid.
The final vote was 49-50.
Republican Senators who voted to advance the bill include Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowski (AK), James Lankford (OK.) and Mitt Romney (UT).
The bill would have provided $60 billion to Ukraine, $14 billion to Israel, and about $20 billion to the U.S. border.
American Faith reported that the House leaders considered the bill “dead on arrival.”
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), and Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) wrote, “House Republicans oppose the Senate immigration bill because it fails in every policy area needed to secure our border and would actually incentivize more illegal immigration.”
“Because President Biden has refused to utilize his broad executive authority to end the border catastrophe that he has created, the House led nine months ago with the passage of the Secure the Border Act (H.R. 2),” the Republicans added. “That bill contains the necessary components to actually stem the flow of illegals and end the present crisis. The Senate must take it up immediately.”
The Republican leaders emphasized that “America’s sovereignty is at stake,” noting, “Any consideration of this Senate bill in its current form is a waste of time. It is DEAD on arrival in the House. We encourage the U.S. Senate to reject it.”
