Security Measures Questioned as Biden Prepares for Address

Ahead of President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech, a substantial metal fence encircles the U.S. Capitol, erected in anticipation of “potential demonstrations.”

Scheduled for Thursday evening, the speech coincides with a planned protest supporting Palestinians at 6 p.m. Organized by People Demand and the Climate Justice Alliance, the event links “Free Palestine” with climate justice.

“We are aware of some potential demonstrations in the area,” stated the U.S. Capitol Police to the Washington Examiner. “Physical security is part of a comprehensive security plan with our federal and local law enforcement partners. Together it is our job to maximize the safety of all attendees and to ensure the event goes as smoothly as possible.”

Regarding the fence’s purpose against specific protest groups, Capitol Police declined to name or support any organizations “by publicizing names/causes.”

Critics, primarily Republicans, swiftly condemned the fence amid the Biden administration’s approach to border security with Mexico.

“Remember this when @POTUS talks about the border tonight,” tweeted Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL). “Biden doesn’t hesitate to put a barrier up for his speech in Washington but refuses to build a wall and secure the southern border.”

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) characterized it as “more stupid spending,” while Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) expressed a wish for similar action at the southern border.

Fox News commentator Jesse Watters suggested the fence reflects Biden’s belief that “he needs protection from you” while neglecting the southern border. He alleged the fence serves as “a sinister symbol to stigmatize” the perception that half of the country is “dangerous.”

Senior adviser to independent 2024 presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr., Link Lauren, mocked the fence on social media, humorously proposing its use along the southern border.

Biden’s State of the Union address, commencing at 9 p.m. EST, follows the October 7 attack by Hamas against Israel. The incident sparked protests nationwide in support of either Palestinians or Israel. In December, Capitol Police arrested demonstrators advocating for a Gaza ceasefire after they occupied the Capitol rotunda.

During Biden’s speech, former President Donald Trump pledged “play by play” to “correct” him. Trump’s likely nomination as the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential candidate sets the stage for a potential rematch with Biden.
