Security Fences Erected in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., erected security fences in preparation for possible protests following the presidential election.

Authorities were seen fencing off the White House Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence at the Naval Observatory, Fox News reported. Barriers have also been installed around the U.S. Capitol and the Treasury Department complex, according to the Washington Post.

The Secret Service said in a statement that the fences are “not in response to any specific issue but are part of wide-ranging public safety preparations for Tuesday’s election.”

Roads surrounding Howard University will also be closed for Harris’ election night party. Similarly, fencing will be installed around the Palm Beach County Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, for former President Donald Trump’s election watch party.

D.C. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said during a news conference that officers “will not tolerate violence of any kind.”

“We will not tolerate the destruction of property,” Smith continued. “We will not tolerate any unlawful behavior. Offenders will be arrested and will be held accountable.”

While there are no known credible threats, the district will deploy 3,300 officers across the area.
