Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced Wednesday the detention of a suspect in connection with the killing of Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov in Moscow. The suspect, an Uzbek citizen born in 1995, was allegedly recruited by Ukrainian intelligence services.
Kirillov, who served as the chief of the military’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb concealed in a scooter outside his apartment building on Tuesday. The explosion also claimed the life of his assistant. The attack came a day after Ukraine’s security service filed criminal charges against Kirillov.
In its statement, the FSB did not identify the suspect by name. However, the agency reported that the suspect confessed to being recruited by Ukrainian special services. Ukrainian officials have reportedly confirmed their involvement in the attack.
The killing underscores the ongoing tension and covert operations between Russia and Ukraine amidst the broader conflict. Russia’s intelligence services continue to investigate possible networks connected to the attack.
The incident highlights escalating risks for high-ranking officials as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of resolution.
