House Republicans have urged the Trump administration to launch an investigation into Grayzone editor Max Blumenthal after he traveled to Iran earlier this year for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral.
The letter, sent by Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL), who was joined by Reps. Keith Self (R-TX) and Randy Weber (R-TX), asserts that Blumenthal “is a radical leftist who hides under the veil of ‘journalism’ to relay propaganda and misinformation that benefits America’s enemies.” The lawmakers wrote in their letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Attorney General Todd Blanche that the journalist is “also known for his support of the Iranian regime” and has made “excuses for Iran’s oppression of its people.”
The letter goes on to draw attention to Blumenthal’s political connections, as he is the son of former White House aide to President Bill Clinton, Sidney Blumenthal, who also served as a “confidante” to Hillary Clinton.
“It should be a matter of grave concern to our law enforcement and counterintelligence agencies that the child of a leading Democratic Party operative has been cultivated as an agent of influence by an FTO and current military adversary of the United States,” the lawmakers wrote.
“Blumenthal’s lengthy track record of supporting enemy propaganda, and his recent participation in Ali Khamenei’s funeral, shows that he sympathizes with America’s enemies and is a threat to the United States national security,” the letter, obtained by Laura Loomer, adds. “I urge you to use your offices to promptly investigate Max Blumenthal to ensure the American public is safe from this traitor.”
Khamenei was killed during an airstrike on his compound in Tehran. He was the longest-serving Iranian leader since Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was deposed during the 1979 Islamic Revolution that created the current regime.
