The House Judiciary Committee has launched an investigation surrounding the security of Supreme Court justices following the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
Supreme Court justices are protected by the U.S. Marshals Service, not the Secret Service.
House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, requesting a briefing on security measures.
The letter detailed the increasing threats the justices have received from “left-wing groups and partisan activists.” Some of these threats related to “restructuring” the Court if the justices did not rule according to the wish of Senate Democrats, the Dobbs decision leak, and a threat against Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s life.
“All of these tactics are meant to intimidate conservative justices for their official actions,” the letter asserted.
“Accordingly, in light of the heightened rhetoric and the recent assassination attempt on President Trump, we remain concerned about the security and safety of all judicial branch officers — including and especially the safety of Supreme Court justices. As such, we request a staff-level briefing regarding the Department’s efforts and the steps taken to ensure and bolster the safety of Supreme Court justices,” the Republicans added.
The briefing is to occur no later than August 6.
