Republican Ohio Senator Matt Dolan Enters Race to Flip U.S. Senate Seat

The race will be a key 2024 contest.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Ohio state Republican Senator Matt Dolan announced his plans to race against Democrat Senator Sherrod Brown for a key U.S. Senate seat.
  • Last year, moderate Republican Dolan lost to current conservative Republican U.S. Senator J.D. Vance in the GOP primaries for another senate seat.
  • “I am unapologetically committed to putting the needs of Ohio first and delivering results as our next U.S. Senator,” Dolan said.
  • “With the courage of my convictions, clarity of purpose and a resolute focus on the challenges and opportunities facing our beloved state, I am ready to lead.”
  • “A lot can change in thirty years, but in that time Sherrod Brown’s commitment to his party has remained the same,” Dolan continued. “Together with Joe Biden, Sherrod Brown has kicked America’s problems down the road for a generation. Their time is up.”
2024 REPUBLICAN BIDS:
  • Indiana Republican Representative Jim Banks announced his bid for Republican Senator Mike Braun’s seat, who is planning to run for Indiana governor in 2024.
  • “Mike Braun has been a reliable conservative in his term. He announced he’s running for governor, so it’s an open seat,” Banks explained. “I just believe I’m the type of conservative leader that Hoosiers are looking forward to send[ing] to the Senate.”
  • “Indiana deserves a conservative fighter in the United States Senate,” Banks said. “But the radical Democrats and the spineless Republicans are going to do everything that they can to stop me.”
  • Former Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels (R) is also reportedly considering a Senate run.
BACKGROUND:
  • Democratic leaders are leaving their party in pursuit of better interests for their constituents.
  • American Faith reported that West Virginia Senator Glenn Jeffries changed his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.
  • The affiliation switch came as Sen. Jeffries expressed concerns with the direction of the Democratic Party, saying he hopes to serve constituents in such a way that it “leads to a better life for all West Virginians.”
  • Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema also changed her political party affiliation from Democrat to Independent.
