Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) has introduced a bill that provides tariff rebates to American families. Under the bill, the $600 rebate for U.S. adults and their dependent children would provide $2,400 for a family of four.
“Americans deserve a tax rebate after four years of Biden policies that have devastated families’ savings and livelihoods,” said Hawley. “Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country.”
The bill, called the “American Worker Rebate Act of 2025,” specifically amends the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to “provide rebates to individuals using tariff proceeds,” the legislation says.
Hawley announced an intention for the bill following President Trump announcing earlier this month that his administration was considering a rebate. “We have so much money coming in, we’re thinking about a little rebate but the big thing we want to do is pay down debt,” the president told reporters. “We’re thinking about a rebate.”
Following Trump’s comments, Hawley said, “I will introduce legislation in the Senate to send a rebate check to every working person in America.”
The legislation comes on the heels of a reported $27 billion budget surplus for June 2025 due to tariff revenue. According to Treasury data, June marked the first monthly federal budget surplus since June 2017. The $27 billion surplus was driven entirely by a surge in customs duties, which totaled $27.2 billion for the month, more than four times the level recorded in June 2024. The senator’s office noted that projections for tariff revenue could surge to more than $150 billion in 2025.
