Rep. Ilhan Omar Gives Speech Addressing Somali Nationalism, Erupts in Calls for Expulsion

Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) gave a speech to Somalians in Minnesota, urging them to protect Somalian interests.

The Somalian immigrant told the crowd that they are “an organized society, brothers and sisters, people of the same blood, people who know they are Somalians first, Muslims second, who protect one another, come to each other’s aid, and to the aid of other Muslims too.”

Adding that people have called her to encourage the U.S. government to help Somalian interests, Omar said the U.S. government “will only do what Somalians in the U.S. tell them to do. They will do what we want and nothing else.”

“They must follow our orders and that is how we will safeguard the interests of Somalia. We Somalians must have that confidence in ourselves that we call for the shots in the U.S.” She added that as long as she is in Congress, she will “represent your interests.”

Omar emphasized, “Sleep in comfort, knowing I am here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system.”

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of Somaliland, Rhoda J. Elmi, condemned Omar’s speech.

Elmi wrote on X, “We were profoundly surprised, even shocked on discovering the remarks made by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D) of Minnesota in a recent public forum, widely circulated on most social media platforms and attached below for your reference.”

“The language she employed was regrettably unbecoming of both the office she holds and the constituents she represents,” she wrote, adding that Omar’s “use of ethno-racist rhetoric didn’t escape attention and left many, with a deep sense of disappointment.”

Elmi called for U.S. leaders to “take note of her public conduct, unbecoming a United States Congresswoman nor representative of the august house she serves in.”

Conservative commentator Liz Wheeler shared on social media, “George Santos was expelled from Congress—by his own party!—because he lied on his resume.”

“Ilhan Omar says she’s Somali first, Muslim second, never says she’s American, & threatens to make the U.S. bow to Somali interests. EXPEL HER, you cowards.”

The account Libs of TikTok also called for Omar’s removal, writing, “@SpeakerJohnson when will Republicans hold a vote to expel Ilhan Omar from Congress? She’s a traitor to America. Santos was expelled for less.”

“I would say Ilhan Omar has dual loyalty, but what’s the loyalty she has besides Somalia?” Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk similarly shared on X.
