A 12-year-old boy in Petersburg, Virginia, is being praised for his courage and composure after saving his family from a house fire on Tuesday. Ramir Parker, a seventh grader, sprang into action after smelling smoke and hearing strange sounds while inside his family’s home on Burks Street.
Ramir was upstairs with his grandmother when he noticed the smell and initially thought it was just his younger brothers, aged one and two, playing after a nap. But when he heard crackling noises and saw black smoke billowing from the basement, he immediately shouted “Fire!” and rushed to rescue his baby brothers.
According to Petersburg Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, Ramir quickly carried the toddlers out and helped evacuate the rest of his family before firefighters arrived. “As glass shattered and the heat intensified, this young boy kept his composure and got his family to safety,” officials said. “Ramir saved lives today. His quick thinking and selfless bravery are nothing short of heroic.”
Battalion Chief Braden Peter confirmed crews saw heavy smoke from three miles away as they rushed to the scene. The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes and was later determined to be caused by an electrical issue.
Video footage showed the home engulfed in flames as the family stood safely outside, thanks to Ramir’s actions. The fire department has expressed a desire to recognize Ramir formally at an upcoming awards ceremony.
Social media users flooded the internet with praise. One commented, “Future fireman right there!” while another thanked God for equipping Ramir with bravery and swift instincts. Calls are growing for Ramir to be honored publicly for his courage and presence of mind in the face of danger.
