Property Owner in Indianapolis Shoots Alleged Burglar, Confronts Second Intruder

Alfred Burdine recounted a harrowing encounter with alleged burglars at his property in Indianapolis, where he shot one intruder and later confronted another upon his return from the police station.

Burdine narrated to WTHR-TV that while leaving for work early Tuesday, he spotted an alleged burglar attempting to steal a generator from his property on North Forest Avenue.

“When I came around, I could see more of him. So, I parked right there, and I got out the car, and he was happy with the generator, walking off that way, and then, I walked up behind him, and then, I circled around him after I got his attention,” Burdine said.

Drawing his gun, Burdine confronted the intruder, who then reached into his pockets as if armed, prompting Burdine to fear for his life and shoot the suspect in the leg.

“The possibility of him going violent at that time was pretty high. It’s 4:30 in the morning, nobody around. You’re bold enough to break into my garage, my house, you’re bold enough to do anything,” Burdine explained. “I shot him in the leg to make him stop, and then, I made him lay on the ground until police came.”

After being questioned by the police, Burdine returned home only to find another alleged burglar attempting to steal from him, as reported by WTHR. The second suspect was also apprehended by law enforcement.

Expressing concern over the prevalence of drug-related issues, Burdine highlighted the lack of treatment facilities for individuals grappling with substance abuse and mental health problems.

“I don’t know what is going on. I think we just need more patrols because there are a lot of people with drug problems, and there is no treatment for them,” Burdine remarked. “Since they closed Central State, where do these people have to go?”

Burdine stressed the need for increased security measures at his property, including repairing broken doors and installing additional security doors.

One of the alleged burglars, identified as 30-year-old Alfie Steadmon, faced charges including burglary and possession of methamphetamine.
