Progressive Democrats Blame U.S. for Russia-Ukraine Conflict

The Democrat Socialists of America called for the United States to withdraw from NATO in order to end “imperialist expansionism.”

QUICK FACTS:
  • The DSA, with members including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Cory Bush (D-MO), is urging the U.S. to pull from NATO, arguing that their push for military enforcement is jeopardizing diplomacy, The New York Post reported.
  • “DSA reaffirms our call for the US to withdraw from NATO and to end the imperialist expansionism that set the stage for this conflict,” the group said in a statement.
  • “While the failures of neoliberal order are clear to everyone, the ruling class is trying to build a new world, through a dystopic transition grounded in militarism, imperialism, and war. Socialists have a duty to build an alternative.”
DSA ON THE UNITED STATES INVOLVEMENT IN UKRAINE:

“We call on antiwar activists in the US and across the world to oppose violent escalations, demand a lasting diplomatic solution, and stress the crucial need to accept any and all refugees resulting from this crisis. Much of the next ten years are coming into view through this attack.”

BACKGROUND:
  • Moderate Democrats are challenging the DSA’s view, saying the U.S. and NATO are not responsible, Newsmax reported.
  • “We’re refugees from Kosovo, a country where me and my family had to flee because of ethnic cleansing and were saved, frankly, by U.S. and NATO intervention there,” Vedat Gashi, a Democrat from New York told The New York Times.
  • “Blaming Ukraine and NATO for the escalation of this Russian invasion of Ukraine is to me, at the very best case, naive and certainly wrong,” Gashi said.
