In a recent interview with Univision, President Joe Biden voiced concerns about Donald Trump’s sway over the Republican Party, characterizing it as a formidable grip that poses a significant challenge to U.S. democracy if Trump were to be re-elected.
Biden criticized Republicans who are hesitant to challenge Trump, asserting that Trump wields considerable influence over the party.
“This is not the Republican Party of the past,” Biden remarked to interviewer Enrique Acevedo. “Trump is the driving force behind it. He has a strong hold on the party, and many are wary of opposing him.”
Biden expressed apprehension about potential ramifications for NATO under Trump’s leadership, cautioning that Trump’s policies could strain the alliance, which would be detrimental to U.S. interests and global stability.
When questioned about the greatest threat to freedom and democracy in the U.S., Biden singled out Trump as his unequivocal response.
Biden cited Trump’s rhetoric and actions, suggesting that a second Trump presidency would resemble authoritarian rule. He referred to Trump’s remarks following the Capitol attack and his statements about minority groups like Hispanics and migrants.
“He claims he will wield dictatorial powers from day one,” Biden asserted. “And his views on constitutional matters are concerning. He openly discusses disregarding parts of the Constitution if he deems it necessary.”
