Rioters in Portland, Oregon, targeted an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility during Saturday’s “No Kings” anti-Trump protests, resulting in injuries to several federal officers. The unrest coincided with President Donald Trump’s celebration of the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary in Washington, D.C., which drew widespread demonstrations across the country.
Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News the attack involved a mob hurling fireworks, smoke grenades, and rocks at federal law enforcement personnel, and eventually forcing entry into the ICE building. “Four officers were injured during the attack, though federal law enforcement was able to secure the facility,” she reported.
Footage circulating online captured the moment protesters—mostly clad in black—chanted “This is what democracy looks like!” Journalist Andy Ngô shared images of officers forming a defensive line against individuals he attributed to Antifa-linked groups.
The protest began around 1:00 p.m., with tens of thousands marching peacefully before reaching the ICE complex. Later in the evening, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) declared an unlawful assembly and warned protesters against impeding medical personnel responding to injuries within the facility. “About 30 minutes later, PPB said a medical event was reported within the ICE facility and medical personnel needed to enter. They warned rioters not to interfere with police, or ‘force may be used against you,’” a bureau statement read.
As rioters escalated their actions, law enforcement moved in to make arrests. KOIN news reported that one individual was detained for allegedly assaulting an officer. In one dramatic move, Oregon state troopers reportedly surged into the crowd to chase off violent actors.
The exterior of the ICE building suffered extensive damage, with smashed windows and graffiti defacing the facade. A Homeland Security tweet showed flyers posted near the site, seemingly doxxing ICE agents. “We will NOT be deterred by rioters’ intimidation and threats,” the agency declared. “ICE immigration enforcement will only ramp up. The violent targeting of law enforcement in Portland, OR by lawless rioters is despicable and its leaders must call for it to end.”
