The large sum leads to questions about Biden’s motives behind several decisions.
QUICK FACTS:
- Hunter Biden’s released plea deal reveals the Biden family received millions from Chinese groups.
- The material covers most of the compensation Hunter Biden received from Ukraine and China between 2016 to 2019.
- Between 2017 and 2018, the president’s son received about $4.9 million from foreign entities.
- According to “Exhibit 1” of the plea deal, Biden earned “just under $1 million from a company he formed with the CEO of a Chinese business conglomerate; $666,666 from his domestic business interests, approximately $664,000 from a Chinese infrastructure investment company; $500,000 in director’s fees from a Ukrainian energy company; $70,000 relating to a Romanian business; and $48,000 from the multi-national law firm” in 2017.
- Biden earned over $2.6 million from the same Chinese conglomerate in 2018.
- He also received $1 million as payment for Patrick Ho’s legal fees.
- Ho was charged with money laundering and violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and was convicted for bribery after trying to obtain advantageous terms for CEFC China Energy’s expansion in Africa.
CFEC CONNECTIONS TO CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY:
- A 2020 letter from Senator Chuck Grassley to then-Attorney General William Barr describes records showing CEFC was an extension of the Chinese government and that CEFC intended to alter U.S. policy and public opinion to its benefit and that the Chinese government would be the principal beneficiary of those actions.”
- The firm also hired several former officials from state-owned energy companies.
- Grassley noted that “CEFC’s corporate mission was ‘[t]o expand cooperation in the international energy economy and contribute to the national development'” of China.
- “CFEC is clearly a foreign principal as defined by FARA and Hunter Biden’s and James Biden’s work for CEFC directly benefitted the communist Chinese government thereby making them potential agents of that government,” the letter states.
- Grassley added that CFEC “may have taken action to influence U.S. policy and public opinion in its favor and gain access to several U.S. politicians” in order to spur beneficial business transactions.
BACKGROUND:
- President Joe Biden has repeatedly denied that he ever spoke with Hunter about business deals.
- “I’ve repeatedly said if the allegations are false, Joe Biden could clear this up by being transparent & sharing the truth with the American people,” Sen. Ted Cruz, (R-TX), said following another denial from Biden. “He’s instead had his administration & the DOJ completely stonewall at every turn.”
- The Iowa GOP rebuked Biden for denying knowledge of his son’s business matters, “even when we have text messages from Hunter to his Chinese business associates suggesting otherwise,” they tweeted.
