Pentagon Secures AI Deals

The Department of War has finalized contracts with seven leading technology companies to use their AI systems for military needs. SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Reflection, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Oracle have each been selected for the development.

“These agreements accelerate the transformation toward establishing the United States military as an AI-first fighting force and will strengthen our warfighters’ ability to maintain decision superiority across all domains of warfare,” the department said in a statement, adding, “As mandated by President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, the Department will continue to envelop our warfighters with advanced AI to meet the unprecedented emerging threats of tomorrow and to strengthen our Arsenal of Freedom.”

The AI tools are expected to “streamline data synthesis, elevate situational understanding, and augment warfighter decision-making in complex operational environments,” the Pentagon explained.

The agreements come as President Trump directed the Pentagon to end its ties with Anthropic. The AI company later filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging that the Pentagon’s decision to label the company as a “supply chain risk” is “unprecedented and unlawful.”

“The federal government retaliated against a leading frontier AI developer for adhering to its protected viewpoint on a subject of great public significance—AI safety and the limitations of its own AI models in violation of the Constitution and laws of the United States,” the filing adds. “Defendants are seeking to destroy the economic value created by one of the world’s fastest-growing private companies, which is a leader in responsibly developing an emergent technology of vital significance to our Nation.”

Last year, the Pentagon announced that it was bolstering its development of six “Critical Technology Areas” that would “define the future of American military superiority. The six areas, Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI), Biomanufacturing (BIO), Contested Logistics Technologies (LOG), Quantum and Battlefield Information Dominance (Q-BID), Scaled Directed Energy (SCADE), and Scaled Hypersonics (SHY), are to address challenges presented on the battlefield.
