Health Showdown: Trump vs. the Left Coast

Blue state Governors Gavin Newsom, Jay Inslee, and Tina Kotek unveiled the West Coast Health Alliance in defiance of President Trump’s revised vaccine policies on September 4, 2025.

Their stated goal is to issue regional vaccine guidance based on recommendations from groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, while also rejecting recent federal directives from HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The alliance directly challenges recent decisions by the Trump administration, which eliminated prior federal vaccine guidance and dismissed the CDC’s vaccine advisory panel.

In a joint statement, the governors stated, “President Trump’s mass firing of CDC doctors and scientists — and his blatant politicization of the agency — is a direct assault on the health and safety of the American people. The CDC has become a political tool that increasingly peddles ideology instead of science, ideology that will lead to severe health consequences. California, Oregon, and Washington will not allow the people of our states to be put at risk.”

The alliance follows sweeping changes under Kennedy’s leadership at the Department of Health and Human Services. In recent weeks, Kennedy terminated 17 members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), ousted hundreds of employees, and eliminated vaccine recommendations for children and pregnant women. These moves were defended by Kennedy as necessary to remove political bias and restore public trust in science.

West Coast leaders characterized the federal overhaul as reckless and ideologically driven. The governors accused the Trump administration of politicizing the nation’s top public health agency, warning it would undermine public safety and create confusion about vaccine protocols. In response, the alliance pledges to preserve stability in vaccine policy across the three states, offering what they describe as “evidence-based, medically sound” alternatives.

While the Trump administration aims to overhaul pandemic-era policies and reduce government influence over personal health decisions, progressive states are solidifying regional frameworks to maintain centralized, science-driven health directives.

Officials from the alliance did not rule out the inclusion of other states in the future. In the meantime, California, Oregon, and Washington will work jointly to review and issue immunization schedules, especially as federal guidance continues to shift under new leadership in Washington, D.C.

RFK Jr. Says CDC ‘Needed New Blood’ After Mass Firings

In a tense Senate Finance Committee hearing on September 4, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. defended sweeping personnel changes at the CDC. He described the firings as “absolutely necessary adjustments” aimed at restoring integrity and effectiveness to the agency. Kennedy emphasized a mandate for “unbiased, politics‑free, transparent, evidence‑based science” as the foundation for future CDC operations.

Senate Finance Committee lawmakers pressed Secretary Kennedy on recent upheavals at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In late August, the CDC laid off roughly 600 employees, and later its director, Susan Monarez, who had been on the job less than a month, was abruptly fired. Four other senior officials also resigned in quick succession.

Kennedy also terminated all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, known as ACIP, which is responsible for vaccine guidance. He defended the move, contesting accusations that he “stacked the deck” in his favor. Instead, he stated, “I depoliticized it,” pointing to “conflicts of interest” on the committee as justification for the purge.

Senator Ron Wyden (D‑OR) pushed back, accusing Kennedy of elevating “conspiracy theorists, crackpots, and grifters” into key decision-making roles on critical health matters. Kennedy flatly rejected this charge, asserting that the CDC had “failed miserably” during COVID‑19—despite representing just 4% of the world’s population, America suffered about 20% of global COVID‑19 deaths.

Kennedy insisted the recent firings targeted those with conflicts of interest, poor judgment, or political agendas. “That’s why we need new blood at CDC,” he stated, arguing the agency needs to return to its mission of protecting Americans through credible science—free of bias or partisan influence. He pledged the agency’s direction would remain rooted in transparency and integrity “for the next three years.”

Israel Lanches Spy Satellite

Israel launched its Ofek 19 military spy satellite this week, a development Defense Minister Israel Katz said was an “achievement of the highest global level.”

Katz wrote on X, “This is also a message to all our enemies, wherever they may be – we are keeping an eye on you at all times and in every situation. And in general, a message to the peoples of the region – come collaborate with these capabilities for a better shared future for all of us.”

“Thanks to the remarkable human capital we have, Israel has the capabilities to be a leading power in the field of space, in a domain where intellect matters more than population size or territorial expanse,” he added. “I intend, together with all those involved in the endeavor, to place great emphasis on the field of satellites and space and to advance it with full force forward.”

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the Ofek 19 satellite as a “highly advanced SAR (synthetic aperture radar) observation satellite with enhanced capabilities.” Upon entering Earth’s orbit, the satellite will undergo tests to ensure its “integrity and performance.”

The nation’s president, Isaac Herzog, said of the satellite’s launch, “We are not just a start-up nation – we are also a space nation.” He stated the launch is a “moment that sums up years of exceptional work – professional, focused, and inspiring.”

“Israel must be in space – that’s where the future of humanity lies,” Herzog said. “Our presence in space is of immense strategic importance, especially in the complex reality in which we operate.”

Newsom and Allies Launch Anti-Trump Vaccine Alliance

West Coast governors have formed a vaccine alliance to circumvent the Trump administration’s health agenda.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, and Washington Governor Bob Ferguson, all Democrats, formed the West Coast Health Alliance in an effort that they claim will protect residents with “science, not politics.”

“President Trump’s mass firing of CDC doctors and scientists — and his blatant politicization of the agency — is a direct assault on the health and safety of the American people,” the governors said in a joint statement. “The CDC has become a political tool that increasingly peddles ideology instead of science, ideology that will lead to severe health consequences. California, Oregon, and Washington will not allow the people of our states to be put at risk.”

According to the governors, the alliance will “help safeguard scientific expertise by ensuring that public health policies in California, Oregon, and Washington are informed by trusted scientists, clinicians, and other public health leaders,” a news release from Newsom’s office explains. The Democratic leaders will coordinate health guidelines by “aligning immunization recommendations informed by respected national medical organizations.”

“Importantly, the three states affirm and respect Tribal sovereignty, recognizing that Tribes maintain their sovereign authority over vaccine services,” the release declares.

Department of Health and Human Services spokesman Andrew G. Nixon condemned the alliance, stating, “Democrat-run states that pushed unscientific school lockdowns, toddler mask mandates, and draconian vaccine passports during the COVID era completely eroded the American people’s trust in public health agencies.”

He noted that the Trump administration’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices “remains the scientific body guiding immunization recommendations in this country, and HHS will ensure policy is based on rigorous evidence and Gold Standard Science, not the failed politics of the pandemic.”

Abbott Doubles Down on Trump’s English Rule for Truckers

Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) directed the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to enforce the English language proficiency requirement established under President Donald Trump.

Under Abbott’s direction, DPS Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Troopers will conduct English language reviews for commercial license operators in the state. Since Trump issued his order on the standard, DPS and partner agencies have “taken enforcement action against approximately 445 commercial vehicle drivers in Texas for English proficiency violations,” Abbott’s office explained. “Of those, about 28 held Texas licenses, while roughly 336 were licensed in Mexico, with the remainder licensed in other states and countries.”

“Truckers play an instrumental role in Texas’ robust economy and in keeping our highways safe,” Abbott said. “Every commercial driver license operator on Texas roadways must be able to communicate clearly in English to ensure compliance with traffic laws, follow safety directions, and prevent accidents. Today, I am directing DPS to enact zero-tolerance enforcement of these federal safety regulations across the board—whether drivers are operating across state lines or only within Texas. This approach will keep Texans safe while keeping our economy moving.”

According to American Truckers United, Texas is “largely responsible for the truck drivers that don’t speak English on America’s roadways.”

Under Trump’s April order on the matter, truckers “should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station officers.”

“Drivers need to provide feedback to their employers and customers and receive related directions in English,” the order read, noting that the policy is “common sense.”

Melania Trump Hosts AI Meeting for Industry Leaders

First Lady Melania Trump held a meeting of the White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Education with the task force members and leaders in the industry’s private sector.

“I predict AI will represent the single largest growth category in our nation during the Trump Administration—and I won’t be surprised if AI becomes known as the greatest engine of progress in the history of the United States of America,” said the first lady. “But, as leaders and parents we must manage AI’s growth responsibly. During this primitive stage, it is our duty to treat AI as we would our own children—empowering, but with watchful guidance. We are living in a moment of wonder, and it is our responsibility to prepare America’s children.”

The meeting is scheduled to occur hours before President Trump hosts a dinner for big tech leaders, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and OpenAI founder Sam Altman, Fox News reports.

Melania Trump announced a nationwide AI challenge for K-12 students in August, inviting them to participate in an event to “discover, develop, and expand AI’s potential.”

According to the initiative’s website, the Presidential AI Challenge celebrates 250 years of independence.

“Early training in the responsible use of AI tools will demystify this technology and prepare America’s students to be confident participants in the AI-assisted workforce, propelling our Nation to new heights of scientific innovation and economic achievement,” the site explains, directing participants in the challenge to “complete a project that involves the study, development, or use of an AI method or tool to address community challenges, while educators will focus on creative approaches to teaching or using AI technologies in K-12 learning.”

Trump’s National Guard Move Sparks Legal Battle With D.C.

D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced that he has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for its deployment of the National Guard.

According to the lawsuit, the federal government is violating federal law by using the military for law enforcement purposes, authorizing the National Guard without DC’s approval, and illegally taking federal control over National Guard troops that are considered state militia.

The complaint states that more than “2,200 National Guard troops from seven states and the District of Columbia are currently patrolling the streets of the District dressed in military fatigues, carrying rifles, and driving armored vehicles.”

“Despite the fact that these troops are in state militia status—and thus are legally required to be under the sole command of their governors—the President has placed them under the control of the nation’s military leadership, which exercises day-to-day supervision over the law enforcement operations they have been designated to conduct,” the filing reads.

Schwalb’s lawsuit further argues that the move “violates both the Home Rule Act and a congressionally approved compact governing the interstate mobilization of state National Guard troops.”

“Deploying the National Guard to engage in law enforcement is not only unnecessary and unwanted, but it is also dangerous and harmful to the District and its residents. No American city should have the US military – particularly out-of-state military who are not accountable to the residents and untrained in local law enforcement – policing its streets,” said Schwalb. “It’s DC today but could be any other city tomorrow. We’ve filed this action to put an end to this illegal federal overreach.”

The lawsuit comes as Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) issued an order directing the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to continue cooperating with federal law enforcement officials. Bowser has also admitted that there was an “extreme reduction” in violent crime after President Trump placed DC under federal control.

DOJ Opens Case Against Lisa Cook

The Department of Justice has launched a criminal probe into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over mortgage fraud allegations.

The investigation comes days after Cook filed a lawsuit against President Trump’s move to remove her from the position. In recent weeks, Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte has also issued two criminal referrals for Cook.

Officials familiar with the probe told The Wall Street Journal that subpoenas have been issued for the case, which is being conducted by DOJ official Ed Martin.

Citing the Federal Reserve Act, Trump wrote in a letter addressed to Cook last month, “You are hereby removed from your position on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, effective immediately.”

“The American people must be able to have full confidence in the honesty of the members entrusted with setting policy and overseeing the Federal Reserve. In light of your deceitful and potentially criminal conduct in a financial matter, they cannot and I do not have such confidence in your integrity,” Trump’s letter read, concluding, “I have determined that faithfully executing the law requires your immediate removal from office.”

Cook’s lawsuit against Trump argued that her removal is “unprecedented and illegal.”

“President Trump’s conception of ’cause’ has no limiting principle,” the lawsuit said. “It would allow him to remove any Federal Reserve Board member with whom he disagrees about policy based on chalked-up allegations.”

Trump’s effort to remove Cook “would subvert the Federal Reserve Act … which explicitly requires a showing of ’cause’ for a Governor’s removal, which an unsubstantiated allegation about private mortgage applications submitted by Governor Cook prior to her Senate confirmation is not,” the filing added.

Seven AfD Candidates Die Before German Elections

At least seven candidates from the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party have died in the lead-up to the September 14th local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the country’s most populous state. While authorities stress that no evidence of foul play has been found, the unusually high number of deaths—particularly within a single party—has raised eyebrows.

In total, 16 candidates across all parties have died before the vote, but no other political party has experienced more than one loss. Police confirmed that four of the AfD deaths were from natural causes, while investigations into the remaining three are ongoing, with no signs of violence reported thus far.

The latest confirmed death was 80-year-old Hans-Joachim Kind, an AfD candidate in the Kremenholl district, who reportedly passed away from natural causes following a prolonged illness.

Election officials downplayed the pattern, with a spokesman for the North Rhine-Westphalia election commission stating that the total number of deaths is “not significantly higher” than in previous elections, noting the large number of candidates running in the state.

The deputy chair of AfD North Rhine-Westphalia, Kay Gottschalk, said the party would treat the deaths “with due sensitivity and care.” She also confirmed that most of the deceased had known pre-existing health conditions, and that “no indications” suggest murder or foul play.

Germany’s political climate has become increasingly polarized, with the AfD leading national polls. According to RTL/NTV’s most recent tracker, AfD currently holds 26% support, narrowly ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU/CSU at 25%, while the ruling Social Democrats have slipped to just 13%.

The unusual string of candidate deaths has not impacted the AfD’s momentum heading into the local elections, where the party remains the top contender despite ongoing scrutiny and controversy from establishment parties.

Disabled Veteran Sues Walmart Over Trans Restroom Harassment

A disabled Army veteran and former Walmart employee has filed a federal lawsuit against the retail giant, claiming he was wrongfully terminated after reporting sexual harassment by a transgender coworker in the men’s restroom. The suit, filed August 28 in the U.S. District Court for Colorado, accuses Walmart of religious discrimination and violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Plaintiff Joseph Allen, a 100% disabled veteran suffering from PTSD and medically diagnosed Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), says the situation began in October 2023 at a Walmart in Woodland Park, Colorado. After a restroom-related IBS incident, Allen asked management to provide alternative restroom accommodations, citing his Christian beliefs that he could not share a restroom with a biological female—his coworker Charlotte, a female identifying as a male.

The lawsuit details that during one restroom visit, Charlotte allegedly stared at Allen’s exposed groin while he used the urinal. Allen reported the incident to management as sexual harassment but says Walmart refused to address his concerns, citing policies that allow employees to use restrooms based on gender identity.

Allen further alleges that following his complaint, Charlotte, another transgender employee named Michelle (who goes by “Mike”), and a third coworker began harassing him in the workplace. He claims they used motorized carts to invade his personal space and followed him around the store. Allen says he continued to report the incidents but received no support from management.

In December 2023, Allen claims a second restroom incident occurred involving Charlotte. Shortly afterward, both Charlotte and Michelle filed harassment complaints against Allen, leading to his termination. Walmart claimed Allen had harassed his coworkers, despite his prior reports and disability-related requests for accommodation.

The suit argues that Walmart discriminated against Allen by ignoring his religious and medical needs, failing to protect him from harassment, and ultimately retaliating against him for making a complaint. It accuses Walmart of prioritizing political correctness and avoiding backlash from the transgender community over its legal obligations to a disabled Christian employee.

Allen is seeking damages for emotional distress, back pay, and a court ruling that Walmart violated his federal rights under Title VII and the ADA.
