Over 5,400 Migrants Apprehended in Ten Months at U.S.-Canada Border, Swanton Sector Sees Detentions Exceed Nine-Year Combined Total

The first ten months of the 2023 fiscal year have seen a significant surge in migrant apprehensions at the Swanton Sector of the U.S.-Canada border.

According to a recent tweet by Swanton Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia, the number of migrants detained has outpaced the total for the preceding nine years.

The official tally is expected to be disclosed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the coming week.

Agent Garcia, through his Twitter account, revealed photographs of migrants endeavoring to enter the U.S. illegally from Canada.

As per his tweet, more than 5,400 migrants were taken into custody by the Swanton Sector agents between October 1, 2022, and the present time for unlawfully crossing the Canadian border at places other than designated entry points.

The stark rise in migrant detentions was noted by Garcia, who stated that the figure for the current fiscal year already exceeds the combined total of the past nine years.

This report will be corroborated by official numbers from the CBP expected to be published next week, Breitbart reports.

The Nationwide Encounters Report by the CBP confirmed that, by the end of June, Swanton Sector agents had detained 4,457 migrants.

Garcia’s tweet also noted that almost 1,000 more migrants have been apprehended since then. The total number of apprehensions for the previous nine years amounted to only 2,455 migrants.

In fact, this year’s tally dramatically downplays the scope of the current apprehensions, as per the official Border Patrol records.

From October 1, 1999, to September 30, 2022, the total number of migrants arrested by Swanton Sector agents amounted to merely 4,098. This fiscal year, with a total of over 5,400 migrant arrests, has surpassed the combined total of apprehensions going back to the Clinton era.

Interestingly, Swanton Sector is one of the rare Border Patrol Sectors to report an uptick in apprehensions when compared to the previous year.

The sudden rise in migrant arrests was first noticed in March 2022, shortly after Texas Governor Greg Abbott decided to broaden the Operation Lone Star border security mission.

This included the construction of border barriers and the initiation of state criminal charges against apprehended migrants.
